Every laptop owner eventually reaches the same question: is it worth repairing, or is it time to replace the machine? Deciding emotionally usually costs money. Deciding with a simple framework almost always saves it.
The 50% rule
If the repair cost is less than half the price of an equivalent new or refurbished laptop, repair is usually the better choice. If it crosses that line, replacement makes more financial sense.
When repair is the smarter choice
- The laptop is under four to five years old
- The fault is isolated: battery, screen, keyboard, hinge, fan or charging port
- Performance is fine and only storage or RAM needs an upgrade
- The configuration still matches your daily workload
When replacement is the smarter choice
- Severe motherboard damage or liquid damage across multiple boards
- Repeated failures within a short period
- The processor generation can no longer run your software comfortably
- Spare parts for the model are discontinued
The third option most people miss
A quality tested refurbished business laptop often costs less than a major repair and gives you a warranty on the whole machine. For teams and startups it is the fastest way to upgrade without a large capital outlay.
