Some laptop components simply wear out with use. Knowing which ones fail first — and their early symptoms — helps you replace them before they damage something else.
Battery
The most frequently replaced part. Warning signs: rapid drain, sudden shutdowns, swelling or a battery that never reaches full charge. A swollen battery should be replaced immediately.
Display panel
Cracks, dark patches, vertical lines, flickering or backlight failure. Screens are usually damaged by pressure on the lid or by carrying the laptop by its display.
Keyboard and trackpad
Repeating keys, dead keys and liquid damage. Replacement is inexpensive and instantly restores usability.
Cooling fan and thermal paste
Loud noise, hot chassis and thermal throttling. Cleaning plus fresh thermal paste often restores performance without any new hardware.
Storage drive
Clicking sounds, long boot times and file corruption signal a dying hard disk. Replace with an SSD and gain speed along with reliability.
Charging port and adapter
Loose charging, intermittent power and burnt smell from the adapter. Always replace with a correctly rated unit.
